the place
On Post Street, just past the old red Kayo Books storefront, you'll find Menage Lux. The room runs long and narrow, which means several heads can be braided at the same time — four chairs, four braiders, four clients in different phases of the same afternoon. It doesn't feel like a salon so much as a working room. You go because stylish girls you met out in San Francisco told you to.
the install
That day Aïssatou did my hair. She works fast and quiet, hands moving in a rhythm you stop noticing after the first hour. She asked me twice, at the start, exactly how tight I wanted them — a good sign; in my experience the ones who don't ask are the ones you regret.
- Boho braids, small/medium, midwaist, with human hair
- Time: 7 hours
- Price: $430.50, plus $88.75 for two bulks of 18-inch body wave human hair (bring your own, they are not provided)
the verdict
The install held. Roots didn't shift, no slip past week three, the parts stayed clean. I wore them in Paris for a month and made sure everyone saw.
