Fulani braids: patterned cornrows at the front, long braids hanging behind, with beads
01

the BASICS

Fulani braids are cornrows and hanging braids in one install. A cornrow runs down the centre of the head, side rows are braided toward the face, and individual braids hang at the back or all the way around.

Beads, cuffs and shells belong to the tradition, not an add-on. Bring your own, or ask what the salon has.

The pattern at the front is where the time goes, and where a braider's hand shows. The back is usually priced like a knotless or box braid install of the same size and length.

Ask how the back is done. Some salons braid it knotless, some do box braids, some crochet or sew in hair at the back, and the price and chair time move with it.

the VARIATIONS

the name

"Fulani" refers to the Fulani people, also called Fula or Peul, spread across West Africa and the Sahel, whose traditional braided styles this one follows: a centre row, rows toward the face, and adornment. "Tribal braids" is the looser word salons use for patterned cornrow-and-braid styles in the same family.

the technique
A specific pattern — bold center cornrow, side nattes braided forward toward the face, loose braids at the back.
the feel

the UPKEEP

washGive them a few days before the first wash. After that, diluted shampoo on the scalp and along the rows every two to three weeks, rinse well, and dry fully, especially at the back where the braids are thickest.
sleepSatin scarf or bonnet every night, tied so it covers the front rows. Take metal cuffs off if they dig in.
lastsFour to six weeks. The cornrows at the front show new growth first; the hanging braids can go longer.
edgesThe face-framing rows sit right on the hairline, so that is where tension shows. Light oil on the parts two or three times a week, and say so in the chair if the front feels tight.
