the BASICS

A braided ponytail is built, not tied. The base is braided or laid flat towards a single point, and the length is added at the gather, which is why it holds where a wrapped ponytail slips.

It's the shortest wear here, two or three weeks, and one of the cheapest and quickest things on a braid menu. Two hours for a sleek one, five or six for the braided and curled versions.

All the weight pulls towards one point, so this is the style where a braider going too tight shows up fastest at the hairline.

the technique: Cornrows braided upward from the hairline to meet at the crown or nape, ending in a long hanging bundle.
